Box Braids Aftercare: What to Do in the First 2 Weeks (Knotless)
By Betty african hair braiding | July 21, 2026
Serving Northeast Colorado Springs (Stetson Hills / Northgate area) and nearby communities.

If you came to us because you wanted a reasonable braiding shop that does a wonderful job, protect that fresh install right away: for the first 48 to 72 hours, don’t wash, don’t heavily manipulate, and don’t pull your braids into tight styles. Keep them covered at night with satin, moisturize lightly, and give your scalp time to settle so your knotless braids stay neat.
The first 48–72 hours: keep your knotless braids calm
Knotless braids are a tension-free version of box braids, designed to feel natural and lightweight. That “easy on the scalp” feeling can get ruined fast if you soak them too soon or keep re-tightening your edges with slick styles.
Quick rule: Hands off, water off for 48 to 72 hours. Keep your scalp clean and dry, and your braids will stay tighter-looking longer.
Here’s what we generally recommend in those first days:
- Skip washing and skip heavy oiling. Too much product at the roots can trap sweat and make your scalp feel itchy.
- Avoid tight ponytails, high buns, and laying your edges every day. Tension plus new braids is how people end up with soreness and frizz at the hairline.
- If you need to work out, keep it light for the first 48 hours. After that, keep sweat under control and dry your scalp fully (more on that below).
- Sleep with a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase, and loosely gather braids into one or two low twists so you’re not rubbing them all night.
A lot of our Colorado Springs clients are busy, including active military households, and the goal is simple: your aftercare should take minutes, not become a second job.
Days 4–7: sweat, sun, and frizz control (Colorado Springs rules)
We hear “Best braids in the Springs!!!” a lot, and we want your braids looking like that all week. The first week is when people accidentally rough them up: too much sun, too much sweat sitting on the scalp, and too many products trying to “make them shiny.”
Colorado Springs has high-altitude sun and dry summer air, so your scalp can feel dry even when your braids look fine. Go light but consistent. A quick mist to the scalp and a small amount of oil on the parts (not dripping) usually beats heavy creams that leave buildup.
If you’re sweating after day 2
After workouts, don’t let damp roots sit under a hat or helmet. Rinse your scalp with water in the shower, or use a diluted cleansing spray on the scalp only. Then dry fully. A cool blow-dryer setting works, or sit under airflow until your roots are dry to the touch. That “damp all day” feeling is where odor and mildew can start.
Kid-friendly aftercare that actually works
We braid a lot of kids, and families tell us they love how welcoming our team is. For children, keep it simple: bonnet at night, no playing in the braids, and a light scalp mist every couple of days if they’re scratching. If you need a satin bonnet or braid spray after your appointment, the Powers/Chapel Hills shopping cluster makes it an easy quick stop.
Your first gentle wash (7–10 days): clean scalp, neat braids
Most people do best waiting 7 to 10 days for the first real wash, unless irritation means you need to cleanse earlier. When you do wash, the goal is a clean scalp without roughing up the braid length.
Our simple wash method
- Dilute a sulfate-free shampoo with water (think squeeze bottle or cup) so it spreads easily on the scalp.
- Apply to the scalp and parts only. Use your fingertips, not nails. Keep the scrubbing gentle.
- Rinse really well. Leftover shampoo is what makes braids look dull and feel itchy.
- Skip heavy conditioner at the roots. Conditioner at the base can cause slippage and frizz.
- Dry completely. Towel-squeeze the braids, then air dry with good airflow or use a cool dryer setting.
When people tell us their styles last longer than expected, it’s usually because they kept their scalp clean, kept water out early, and didn’t overload the roots with product.
Products and habits that protect box braids (without buildup)
You don’t need a whole shelf of products. You need the right types, used lightly.
- Light braid spray or diluted leave-in: Mist the scalp and parts, then gently pat with a towel if it feels too wet.
- Tea tree or jojoba oil (sparingly): A few drops on the scalp can help with dryness. Don’t soak the base.
- Edge protection: Avoid tight edge styling and frequent re-braiding around the hairline. That’s where breakage starts.
- Hands-off habit: Picking frizz makes more frizz. If you see flyaways, smooth lightly with a little mousse on the length, not the roots.
And if you chose boho braids, keep the curly pieces separate when you sleep. Loosely braid or twist the curly hair at night so it doesn’t matte up by week two.
Swim, touch-ups, and when to reach out to our team
A quick check-in can save a whole install. If your scalp feels intensely tight, you see red bumps that are getting worse, or you notice a braid slipping out early, let us know. We’ll talk you through the next step and, if needed, get you scheduled for a quick touch-up.

Swimming with knotless braids
Yes, you can swim. The trick is what you do right after. Rinse your braids and scalp with fresh water as soon as you can, cleanse the scalp if you’ve been in chlorine often, and dry fully. Don’t leave wet braids in a bun under a towel for hours.
